The power of belief
Your reality reflects your strongest beliefs.
A gentleman was walking through an elephant camp.
He noticed that the elephants were not being kept in cages or held using chains. All that was keeping them in the cages and holding them back from escaping the camp, was a small piece of rope tied to one of their legs.
As the man observed the elephants – who are believed to be intelligent and strong – he was baffled as to why they didn’t use their strength or intelligence to break the rope and escape the camp. They could easily have done so, but instead, they did not even try. They moved as far the rope would let them.
Curious, he asked the trainer who was standing nearby if the elephants ever tried to escape and the ropes were too strong [rope of steel].
The trainer replied,
“when the elephants were babies and therefore much smaller, we used the same type and size of rope to tie them; at that age, it was enough to hold them. At some point, they did try to break free but couldn’t because they were not strong at that age. As they grew up, they got conditioned to believe that they could not break away. Now as adults, they still believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”
The only reason that the elephants weren’t breaking free and escaping from the camp was that over time they adopted the belief that it just wasn’t possible. If they had tried every so often, they might have discovered they could break free, trample the trainer and run wild.
As we near the end of 2018, let us think of things, people, situations etc that [in the beginning] were too strong for us to break free from. And as we celebrate this day and welcome 2019, let us begin the year with the belief that we can soar to great heights and we should try again and again no matter how many times we fail. Belief is important because it’s what you believe you can achieve that becomes your reality. Make your beliefs positive.
